Early morning flooding in Whanganui, New Zealand

Footage of severe flooding in Whanganui, New Zealand on Sunday 21 June 2015.

"This was filmed at 3.00am on the Sunday morning of 'the big flood' in Whanganui New Zealand. The Whanganui River rose above its banks and flooded the CDB at 1030pm the previous evening," the filmer later wrote online.

"This was a 'fresh' from the Whanganui catchment which was measured at 15.8 meters above normal at the settlement of Pipiriki, 55 miles upstream from Whanganui township. A months average rainfall had fallen in only the space of two days. When this flood water arrived in Whanganui, it met the ocean tide, and high tide pushed the water into low lying suburbs and streets.

"I had finished nightfill at a local supermarket and walked around a few city blocks filming these shots until some police asked me to leave the flood zone and go home!

"Our river has many small 'fresh's' each year, but the streets in this video have not been flooded in this manner since 'the great flood of 1940' and the big flood in 1904 prior to that."
