Tornado-strength winds hit South Jersey

Further dramatic footage has emerged of tornado-like winds ripping through New Jersey, US on Tuesday evening.

In the video, captured by a passenger in a car driving through Mantua at around 07:00pm (local time), trees and electricity poles can be seen lying in the road.

According to local news reports, the National Weather Service investigated whether sightings in South Jersey were tornadoes and later confirmed that – although no tornadoes touched down - 85mph straight-line winds did hit the area.

“Scrambling from Main St, to Heritage Road, back to Main Street and finally the Chestnut Branch Park in Mantua, NJ, there really weren't many safe places to sit. Grateful we weren't electrocuted by the electric wires that came down with a pole we slipped under and were dragging behind our car,” the filmer later wrote online.
