Cape Town mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis, used the opening of the 2022 Cape Town as an opportunity to appeal to the South African government to lift the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions, which have been in place since March 2020. The last time the carnival took place was in 2019. The carnival was canceled in 2020 as Covid-19 spread across South Africa.

South Arica has been under various levels of lockdown since March 2020 which effectively caused most major public events and festivals to happen under certain restrictions. Public events can still only operate at 50% capacity at indoor events.

Geordin Hill-Lewis is a mayor deployed by the Democratic Alliance (DA) , South Africa’s official opposition party. The City of Cape Town is under the political control of the DA. The DA is calling on President Cyril Ramaphosa and the ruling ANC government to lift the lockdown and the state of disaster.
