Police seize cash and sports cars from two Indonesian YouTubers for 'running financial trading scam'
Police seized cash and sports cars from two Indonesian YouTubers for allegedly running a financial trading scam.
Authorities confiscated assets of young online influencer Doni Taufik, 23, amounting to 4.5million USD for allegedly running a fraud scheme through an app called Quotex while police took 4million USD worth of properties from YouTuber Indra Kenz, 26 for being part of Binomo app. Both apps were listed as trading platforms and were investigated for fraud last month.
Officers found cash worth DR 3.3 billion (230,239 USD), 18 units of big bikes, and six luxury cars such as a Porsche 911 Carrera, Lamborghini Huracan, BMW M4 in Doni's home in West Java, Indonesia. Indra had a collection of luxury vehicles and items seized as well as two houses, and buildings in North Sumatra.
Doni and Indra, who apparently both have a taste for the expensive lifestyle, were charged with fraud and money laundering and faces up to 20 years in prison if proven guilty.
Director of Cyber Crimes at the Indonesian National Police Brigadier General Asep Edi Suheri said on March 15: 'So far, we have confiscated 97 items of evidence to use for the investigation.
'We also took four email and social media accounts, where one of them was used for a YouTube channel. The other three accounts were connected to another YouTube account and Quotex accounts.'
Aside from the cars and cash, two housing units, two plots of land, a Porsche 911 Carrera 4s, a Lamborghini Huracan, a BMW M4, two Honda CRV cars, a Toyota Fortuner car, a Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle, Ducati Superleggera motorcycles, Five Yamaha Gear motorcycles, KTM motorcycles and MSI motorcycles were seized from Doni.
Police also confiscated a Macbook Pro and three other computers as well as several luxury items such as shoes, pants, hats, dozens of cell phones of various brands, and dozens of books on trading.
Asep ensured that the police would continue to trace the assets and flow of funds from Doni and Indra who earned the nickname Crazy Rich Bandung on social media as they were not one to hide their crazy rich lifestyle.
Doni was allegedly an affiliate of the Quotex app based in Seychelles, East Africa, which Indonesian police suspect is a gambling app under the guise of trading.
As an affiliate, Doni's tasked was to recruit people to 'bet' or 'play' their money on the Quotex application. He was successful in recruiting people by posting images of his lavish lifestyle on social media, where he allegedly made followers believe that his assets came from the app.
The YouTuber Doni would then receive a profit of up to 80 per cent of the total defeat of the people he recruited.
On the other hand, Indra was a well-known influencer, binary options trading content creator, and financial 'educator.' In his videos, he recruited people to join another app called Binomo. He was detained on February 25 after being arrested in an operation as previously ditched police invitation for questioning as he went to Turkey for 'treatment.'
Investigations on the alleged grand investment scam is ongoing.
