A London Fire Brigade spokesman today (March 23) confirmed that "a number of people were treated" after coming into contact with chlorine gas at London Aquatics Centre in Stratford.

"We found that there had been a release of high quantities of chlorine gas," said Shaun Coltress, Station Commander at London Fire Brigade,

"As a result, a number of people were treated by London Ambulance Service," he added.

Coltress said around 200 people were evacuated from the building.

He said that the plan was to ventilate the building to allow the chlorine gas to escape and they were asking local residents to keep doors and windows closed.

The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park tweeted: “There has been an incident
@AquaticsCentre this morning involving the release of a gas. The area has been cordoned off and evacuated. We're working with emergency services on site. There are a number of casualties with breathing difficulties being treated by @Ldn_Ambulance.”

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan tweeted: "I remain in close contact with our emergency services who are dealing with a gas-related incident at the London Aquatics Centre this morning.

"A number of people are being treated by @Ldn_Ambulance. Please avoid the area which has been cordoned off and evacuated."

The Aquatics Centre was one of the venues at the London 2012 Olympics.
