Ukrainian band in Kyiv ask to perform remotely for Ukraine benefit concert in England
A Ukrainian band currently fighting in Kyiv has asked to perform remotely at a Ukraine benefit concert being held in England.
Donning military gear, the musical group Antytila on March 22 sent a message to pop star Ed Sheeran offering to sing via video call for the 'Concert for Ukraine' event scheduled in Birmingham on March 29.
They said: "Today we learned about your charity concert for Ukraine, which will take place in Birmingham. And we offer to make a live broadcast between Kyiv and Birmingham with Antytila temporarily joining the gig remotely.
"Our band will play our music in Kyiv, a city that has not surrendered and will never surrender to the Russian occupiers. You will play in Birmingham.
"We are not afraid to play under the bombs. Through music, we want to show the world that Ukraine is strong and unconquered. We will fight and sing for victory in front of the whole world that supports us."
The fundraising concert will be aired on British network ITV, with proceeds from the show to be donated to the UK Disasters Emergency Committee's Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal. Artists such as Ed Sheeran, Camila Cabello, Snow Patrol, Emeli Sande, and Gregory Porter have been announced to perform.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a ‘special military operation’ in Ukraine’s Donbas region late February. He said in a public address on February 24: ‘We decided to launch a special military action aimed at demilitarisation and denazification of Ukraine.’
The United Nations Refugee Agency said almost 3.4 million people in Ukraine have escaped to adjoining countries since the invasion began.
