Climate Strike protest outside South Africa’s parliament

Youth from schools across Cape Town gathered outside South Africa’s parliament for a climate strike protest. They were joined by members from several environmental organisations and political movements who are calling on South Africa’s government to formulate and draft more environmental conscious legislation.

Recently these groups were able to block global oil company, Shell plc, from conducting seismic drilling tests off South Africa’s Wild Coast. Several years ago they also opposed and blocked fracking in South Africa’s dry and rid Karoo region.

Linda Seekoei, a youth environmental activist, said there were deep links between colonialism, apartheid and climate justice as settlers came to South Africa and profited from the environment while indigenous people only used what they needed.
