New lease of life for old 'abandoned' medieval church in Kent, UK
Murston All Saints Trust (MAST) are using lottery funding & other grants to give a quirky old 'abandoned' medieval church in Sittingbourne, Kent, UK a new life.
Their 'Murston Heart Project' is working with local community to shape a new future for Murston Old Church and its churchyard.
They hope to bring back the beautiful medieval church in its green oasis on the banks of Milton Creek back into the heart of the community, after many problems with vandalism and anti-social behaviour in the small recreational park the church is situated within.
The tiny church building - which oddly now finds itself surrounded by the large and sprawling Sittingbourne Eurolink Industrial Estate - is mid-way through the process of being refurbished as captured in this footage filmed March 24.
Murston Old Church was abandoned when the original centre of Murston in Sittingbourne, Kent had to move and a newer church displaced it.
As well as restoring the remains of the church, a small 'creative community hub' is being built next to it, which will contain units for artists plus a community cafe.
Project leaders hope this will bring 'new life' to the area and drive out anti-social influences that the area had previously attracted due to its unusual and 'out of the way' location within an industrial estate.
