Video captured eerie, deserted scenes in Ukraine's capital Kyiv on Monday 28 March, as residents who have not already escaped hunker down for a long fight.

The normally bustling Kyiv train station -- a major transportation hub that often serves 170,000 passengers a day -- is now barely used, with only a few trains still carrying passengers each day now.

Elsewhere, schools and playgrounds were silent following the mass departure of women and children from the Ukrainian capital.

Many of those who have not already fled are involved in fighting or are supporting those who do, running things like small grocery stores.

Others have simply decided they will not be forced from their homes and are hunkering down for the long haul.
