As war devastates Ukraine, workers around the country are covering its monuments with sandbags to protect them from Russian shelling and other potential damage.

On March 27 hundreds of sandbags were stacked around a statue in Kharkiv of Taras Shevchecnko, a Ukrainian poet and national hero.

Kharkiv is 25 miles (40km) from the Russian border and is heavily bombarded every day.

Despite the proximity to Russia, Ukrainians have been able to hold on the city centre of Kharkiv.
