A shocked housewife found a rat swimming in her toilet.

Footage shows the rodent's long tail poking out of the hole while the frantic woman poured buckets of water to flush it down in her home in Makati City, the Philippines on March 3.

The defiant rat held its ground and refused to fall down the sewers while the house owner could be heard shouting in fear.

Josephine Adel said: 'I was about to use the toilet when I saw the rat. It was making a squeaking sound like it was trapped but when I pour water onto it, the rat would not leave.'

The woman added she left the rat alone in the toilet for hours and when she returned to check at night, the animal was gone.

She said: 'It was gone by evening. I let it sort its business out and gave it time to leave.'
