Donk! SpiceJet Boeing 737-800 reverses into lamppost at airport in India
Terrified passengers were jolted in their seats when a Boeing 737-800 collided with a lamppost in India on Monday, March 28.
The aircraft - the same model that crashed in China this month - was being pushed back to prepare for takeoff at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi.
Footage recorded by a passenger shows the moment the aircraft operated by low-cost carrier SpiceJet crashed into the metal pole.
The lamppost bent 45 degrees upon impact, while pictures showed a large dent on the plane's aileron.
Officials said that SpiceJet flight SG 160 was preparing to take off for Jammu at around 9:20 am when the incident occurred.
No one was reported hurt, and passengers were moved to a different plane for the onward journey. The plane, with the registration VT-SLJ, was put back into service the next day.
A SpiceJet spokesperson said: 'During push back, the right-wing trailing edge came in close contact with a pole, causing damage to aileron. A replacement aircraft has been arranged to operate the flight.'
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), India's civil aviation regulator, said airline staff involved in the accident have been de-rostered. The employees in question have also reportedly undergone breath analyser tests which came back negative.
DGCA director-general Arun Kumar said: 'Officers from the Director Air Safety (DAS) of the northern region have visited the site for further investigations.'
The SpiceJet plane is a Boeing 737 from the 800 series of jets. The full model details a Boeing B737-8EH while the China Eastern plane that crashes was listed as Boeing 737-89P. The last two letters refer to the delivery customer.
