Thick smoke from a shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur sparked panic among shoppers after a roast duck restaurant inside caught on fire on Wednesday March 30.

The smoke engulfed the roof of Pavilion Kuala Lumpur as the fire razed the Dragon-i Peking Duck restaurant on its first floor.

The Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department said they received a call at around 2:12 pm and sent out 11 firefighters and two fire engines to respond to the emergency. A department spokesperson said: 'The fire eventually extinguished itself. At the same time, five fire sprinklers broke due to the heat generated by the fire.'

They added that the smoke was so thick due to it passing through the mall's chimneys from the restaurant's kitchen area. There were no injuries or casualties from the incident.

Meanwhile, mall management said the fire was immediately extinguished and an investigation into its cause is now underway. They said in a statement: 'The Fire and Rescue Department, together with our Operations and Security Department, are currently investigating the cause of the fire. No one was hurt, and the mall remains open for business as usual.

'Rest assured that Pavilion Kuala Lumpur will continue to take all necessary precautionary measure to ensure the safety and health of our shoppers and tenants.'
