Food price inflation is sparking concern around the world, but in Indonesia it's causing a cooking oil shortage and desperate scenes when a truck of the stuff overturned on Tuesday 29 March.

The food oil tanker overturned on in Muktisari Village, Cipaku District, Ciamis Regency in West Java, at around 2:15pm local time.

Around 14,000 litres (3,698 US gallons) of the stuff was being carried by the lorry at the time and much of it spilled onto the road and a storm drain beside it.

The crew on board were badly hurt and remain so despite being treated at the Cipaku Health Centre, but locals seemed more concerned about the opportunity to get some free oil amid a nationwide shortage.

They resorted to scooping the golden brown liquid out of the drainage ditch beside the road.

The buckets and jerry cans into which they poured the salvaged oil then became bones of contention as they argued over how to divide their contents.
