Police raid call centre gang in Cambodia 'pretending to be Thai officers to extort money'
Police raided a call centre gang in Cambodia that allegedly pretended to be Thai cops to extort money.
Officers arrested 28 foreigners - Taiwanese, mainland Chinese, and Thai nationals - in the group's hideaway disguised as an abandoned factory building in Sihanoukville, Cambodia on March 24 in a joint operation of Thai and Cambodian authorities.
Among those arrested were Taiwanese nationals Xin Hang Te, 28, Zhang Jian Tian, 41, and Thai national Pornsak Reepol, 30. The three foreigners allegedly headed the operation and managed 25 other 'agents' under them.
Thai police first found out about the call centre network from complaints of five locals. They said a call centre group allegedly pretended to be officers from Chiang Mai police station and called victims about 'their parcel containing illegal items'.
The victim would then receive another bogus call, this time from a FedEx or DHL employee, to 'verify' the contraband in their parcel. Once they hooked the victims, the fake police would call them again to ask for bribes in exchange for their freedom.
Electronic devices which were reportedly used for fraud such as four computers, 30 iPhones, and eight radio communication units were seized as evidence.
Thai Police Cyber Taskforce officer Major General Teeradet Thammasutee said: 'We wanted to find more people involved here. We know their operation is part of a bigger network.
'We cooperated with the Cambodian authorities after tracing the calls coming there. We encourage more people to report to us if they have been one of the victims.'
There have only been five complainants from Thailand so far but authorities believed there were more who have fallen victim to the group's modus as they have been using high tech devices for frauding.
Police are now searching for the group's cohorts in an ongoing investigation. Immigration officers were also working on taking the arrested foreign nationals to Thailand to face their charges.
