Workers in northern China blew up a frozen river to prevent flooding in the nearby area.

Video filmed in Huma County in Heilongjiang Province on March 29 shows workers digging holes in a frozen river and putting explosives into them.

A worker then counts down to blow up the ice jam, sending the water into the sky.

According to reports, Huma County will carry out four consecutive blast operations from March 29 to March 31, with a total length of 11,100 meters, which was the longest in history.

An ice jam is caused by melting snow and ice in the springtime it happens when chunks of ice clump together to block the flow of a river.

The explosions will help reduce the possibility of the huge chunks of ice blocking the river at the Huma section.
