Footage shows tourists on Thailand's well-known backpacker street Khaosan Road this morning as the country continues to ease travel restrictions despite rising Covid-19 case.

Sprightly holidaymakers were up early for breakfast on the famous party street as they set about the day's activities in the capital Bangkok.

It came as Thailand recorded a record high of 28,379 new coronavirus cases on April 1 fuelled by the spread of the Omicron variant.

Ministers are hoping that the virus will be endemic by July. They have already relaxed the requirement for anyone entering the country to have a second PCR test on the fifth day. However, Thai nationals and visitors must still fit out extensive paperwork before flying, take pre-departure tests, quarantine for one day in a hotel, take a lateral low test on day five, use face masks and install a government tracking app.

Economists have warned that it could still be another five years before the country’s tourism industry returns to pre-pandemic levels.

Two years ago tourism made up an estimated 21 per cent of Thailand’s GDP, generating 1.8 trillion baht in revenue. However, the country's National Economic and Social Development Council predicted that it could be another five years before similar numbers are seen.

Analysts said that between now and 2026, around seven million workers will continue to be affected by the economic harm from the Covid-19 pandemic.
