Community activists protested at the tidal pool adjacent to the iconic Brass Bell Restaurant after the public was made aware of building activity at the restaurant which would effectively close the beach to the public. The Brass Bell is one of Cape Town’s oldest and most well known restaurants and a tourist attraction in Kalk Bay.

Activists accused Tony White, the owner of the Brass Bell, of illegally extending his restaurant onto a publicly owned beach. The City of Cape Town has issued the Brass Bell with a cease and desist letter until the matter is further investigated.

Kalk Bay its a coastal fishing village that was immensely affected by Apartheid-era laws and forced removals. The community which historically made up of working class fishing families were violently evicted under Apartheid legislation and they were resettled in municipal flats.

The Kalk Bay community as well as other activists plan to stop the Brass Bell from denying the public from accessing the beach through its building extensions and renovations.
