Distressing footage shows bodies of male civilians inside a basement in Bucha, Ukraine.

The victims have their hands bound and were kneeling before being shot in their heads by Russian forces.

Bucha, a city in Ukraine's Kyiv Oblast, has been at the centre of heavy fighting and atrocities committed as the Russian troops withdrew from the area.

According to local sources, dozens of civilians were killed. Hundreds of people have been buried in mass graves, and many dead civilians still lie on the streets.

Mayor Anatoly Fedoruk told the AFP news agency that residents, both women and men, were shot in the back of the head.

Today (April 3) Liz Truss, UK Foreign Secretary, has said that the atrocities must be investigated as war crimes. The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, has condemned the actions carried out by the Russian military.

European leaders have now vowed to impose further sanctions against Russia over the killings of unarmed civilians.
