A dedicated husband saved money inside giant plastic bottles to buy a birthday gift for his wife.

Father-of-one Gai Chutikan filled a 20-litre water bottle with coins and notes in their home in Chainat province, Thailand.

Gai planned to keep the surprise a secret until he gave up counting the money on his own so he could buy his beloved wife a gift.

Footage shows relatives pouring coins out of the bottles and counting them together on March 29. It took them a day to count the total amount of 80,000 THB (1,800 GBP) coins and 200,000 THB (4,500 GBP) notes.

Loving husband Gai said: 'I have been saving for a year to buy her a birthday gift. I let her decide what to do with the money and we planned to go shopping together later.'

Touched wife Nan said: 'My husband and I have been through thick and thin together. He has always been loving to me and our daughter.

'This is not the first time he saved so much money to buy me gifts. In the past, he bought me gold necklaces and bracelets for me to wear. I’m very lucky to have him in my life.'
