Huge waves strew sand and seaweed across Spanish town after meteotsunami warning

Huge waves that followed an official meteotsunami warning covered parts of a southern Spanish town on Tuesday (April 5) with sand and seaweed.

Footage captured in San Jose, Almeria, showed the seafront promenade turned into an extension of the beach with sand surrounding benches and bins.

Wooden walkways were torn up by the power of the water and the beach was littered with other debris.

Locals said they hadn't seen anything like it in at least 15 years.

Spain's weather agency AEMET activated alerts for a meteotsunami or "rissaga" late last week.

Meteotsunamis are tsunami-like sea waves produced by rapid changes in barometric pressure, rather than seismic activity.

Meteotsunamis can be powerful and cause destruction to coastal areas.
