British 'cocaine baron' refuses to answer questions from squalid cell in Manila, the Philippines
A British ‘cocaine baron’ has refused to answer questions from his cell in the Philippines after being detained for alleged drug trafficking.
Darren Wall, 44, was arrested on March 23 at the Secret Door nightclub in Manila following a suspected attack and firearms offence. Police held him in custody and claimed to have uncovered a underworld empire involving kidnapping, extortion, drug dealing, assault, criminal damage and threats to kill. He is even said to have been paying local police monthly retainers for them to turn a blind eye to his rampages, with five officers now being investigated.
Wall replied 'no comment' to every question asked of him at the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) holding facility.
Officials said that Wall is hoping to return to London and dodge drug trafficking accusations that could reportedly see him jailed for life in the country, which takes a hard-line against illegal substances.
Police Colonel Michael Villanueva, District Chief of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), said: 'We’re still waiting for Immigration to reply but we have already submitted all the necessary documents for his deportation. We’re just awaiting for the approval of the Commissioner if he is to be deported.
'I already sent a letter to Immigration regarding Darren Wall for being an undesirable alien in the country. All documents were there including the case folders.
'The British Embassy has no formal coordination with our office yet but we have received a call from someone who identified as a vice-consul.'
The Brit thug - who was jailed for four years in the UK in 2013 for stealing an ATM and then crashing the getaway car into a ditch - moved to the Philippines following his release. He married glamorous local bar-girl Khanary Jane Abejo, 23, and they had a child together while Wall built up his alleged crime empire in Manila's notorious red-light district.
Police Colonel Michael Villanueva said Wall is now facing a life sentence of 18 years without parole if he is found guilty of drug dealing and possessing a handgun.
There could be further charges added depending on the investigation. However, Wall could also dodge a deadly Philippine prison if prosecutors decide to deport him instead.
The policeman said: 'We conducted a record check and found out that he is facing a fraud charge according to Interpol records. We also have information that he is involved in scamming in other countries.
'We will be coordinating with the Bureau of Immigration regarding his deportation and also we will check his records.
'We have a lot of evidence against Darren but we are waiting for the right time to use it.'
