Tropical Storm Megi hit the Philippines over the weekend, bringing intense rains and flooding to the country's central islands.

Video shows a downpour and strong winds hitting a neighbourhood in Leyte municipality in Leyte province on April 10.

The storm, locally known as Agaton, made landfall in Guiuan municipality, Eastern Samar at 7:30 am on Sunday with maximum sustained winds of up to 75 kilometres per hour.

Local weather bureau Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration said Megi has weakened but still poses a threat, packing maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometres per hour. It is set to make a second landfall as it trails west-northwest towards Eastern Leyte.

As of Sunday afternoon, some 1,419 passengers returning to their provinces for the country's Holy Week were stranded in ports due to the inclement weather, the Philippine Coast Guard said.
