Fans slam high ticket prices for Man United Liverpool friendly in Thailand
Supporters have slammed the high prices to watch a friendly between Manchester United and Liverpool in Thailand in July.
Tickets for the lucrative summer tour exhibition match cost between 5,000 Baht (114 GBP) and 25,000 Baht (571 GBP) at the stadium in Bangkok - higher than last year’s Champions League final.
In contrast, the average minimum wage across the semi-developed country is just 324 Baht (7.41 GBP) a day.
Supporters of the two teams - that have both struggled with poor performances this season - have criticised the ticket prices.
Life-long Man Utd fan Peter - who even changed his name to be the same as the goalkeeper - said: ‘I’ve followed my team since Andy Cole played. It has always been my dream to watch them. But I don’t have the money for a ticket so I will stand outside the stadium and listen to noise of the crowd.’
Writing online, Nattawut Wiangin said:’ It feels better watching the game on TV. I can stay at home watch and drink beer.’
Apisit Netphol added: ‘I hope they will they give free noodles and tinned food with the ticket because I will have to live only on those after paying.’
Reangchai Ritrak said: ‘It’s too expensive. The players are only coming here for some exercise.’
Another user added: ‘The organizers are putting profit first. Only people with money can go instead of giving every fan the chance to watch.’
The Covid-19 pandemic had temporarily stopped pre-season friendlies but with travel restrictions now eased, many Premier League teams will be embarking on the money-spinning overseas trips.
Tours to Southeast Asia and the Far East have been particularly lucrative in recent years as both sides have large fan bases in the tropical regions, where domestic leagues are still underdeveloped.
The friendly between the two teams at the Rajamangala National Stadium on July 12 has been dubbed the ‘Red War’ by promoters. They hope to recreate the feel of a Premier League clash.
Former United striker Andy Cole said: ‘I’m not sure it will be played like a pre-season friendly. It will be the same players as you see now with a few additions if transfer deals happen.’
Organizer Vinij Lertratanachai, head of the Fresh Air Festival, said the stadium would be improved to meet the clubs' standards.
