Indonesian police arrested hundreds of students today (April 11) after clashes broke out during a furious protest over high cooking oil prices and a possible extension of President Joko Widodo's stay in office.

Footage captured in the city of Padang in West Sumatra showed thousands of university students gathered outside a local government building.

The crowds began to push against police lines, hurled projectiles and attempted to remove razor wire.

The president on Sunday (April 10) attempted to dampen speculation of a plan being hatched by his allies to extend his term.
