Boats carrying relief goods crash into bridge during Tropical Storm Megi floods in the Philippines
This is the moment two boat carrying relief goods crashed into a bridge during floods caused by Tropical Storm Megi in the Philippines.
The team were on their way to deliver aid to flooded residents when they were swept away on the swollen Panay River in Capiz province on April 13. Onlookers screamed when the two boats lost control in the strong currents before smashing into a bridge.
The high water level due to several days of continuous rains mean there was not enough space between the structure and the water for the vessel to pass under.
With the vessels wrecked, the rescuers were seen struggling to stay afloat as the river carried them away.
The Capiz Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council told local media there were 20 people on board when the crash occurred. Fifteen have been found while five were reportedly still missing. A search and rescue operation is now ongoing.
Tropical Storm Megi, locally known as Agaton, made landfall in Guiuan municipality, Eastern Samar at 7:30 am on April 10 with maximum sustained winds of up to 75 kilometres per hour.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said at least 58 have died due to landslides and flooding triggered by the storm. The agency added that more than 34,583 locals have evacuated to some 348 safety centres in different regions.
Megi has also caused agricultural damage worth at least 51 million PHP (around 980,000 USD).
State weather bureau Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration has lifted all cyclone warnings saying Megi has dissipated on Wednesday, but rain showers are still expected in the country's central provinces.
