Elephant race marks new year in northeastern India

Locals in northeastern India's Assam organised an elephant race to celebrate Rongali Bihu- a festival that marks the beginning of the Assamese New Year.

The race took place on April 15 in Sivasagar district of the state.

Visuals showed mahouts atop pachyderms as they took part in the race. Several people thronged the roads to witness the spectacle.

According to reports, the celebrations to mark the new year started on April 14 and will go on till April 16. Rongali Bihu ushers in the harvest period in the state.
