Himalayan monastery displays object claiming to be skull of YETI that was debunked by Sir Edmund Hillary
Intrepid visitors to this monastery near Mount Everest in Nepal can gaze upon a very unusual artefact that claims to be the skull of a yeti but was debunked years ago by Sir Edmund Hillary.
The furry object has pride of place at Khumjung monastery where it sits in a glass case.
Monks at the religious site, which lies at 3790 metres, say the yeti skull is 300 years old.
The relic is purported by the village to have come from one of the “abominable snowmen” of Himalayan legend and was found by Hillary and journalist Desmond Doig in 1960 when they were on an expedition to look for evidence of the beast.
Hillary took the scalp with him to be examined and it turned out to have been made from the hide of an animal, most likely a goat-antelope native to the Himalayas.
It was later returned to the monastery.
