Firsthand look at Kharkiv kindergarten hit by Russian shell
Russian attacks on the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv on Sunday hit several buildings in the center, including a kindergarten and residential buildings.
Footage exclusive to Newsflare filmed on April 17 and 18 shows firefighters rushing to save a smoldering building in Ukraine’s second-largest city, while rubble and destruction can be seen in the streets around the site.
The clip then shows a kindergarten damaged by a nearby explosion. While no kids were killed, the toys, furniture and windows of the kindergarten are destroyed and covered in rubble and dust.
"After the explosion, a bed caught fire and we threw the burning mattresses out of the window so that the whole building would not start burning," staff member Nadezhda says.
The next scenes again show firefighters trying to clear streets and buildings with house and shop fronts devastated by gunfire.
There has been "regular shelling of the central part of Kharkiv," Andrey of the Ukrainian State Emergency Service SES says. "As a result, fires broke out in residential buildings. In general, rescuers were called to the scene of fires 15 times after the shelling."
On Sunday, it was reported that shelling in Kharkiv had killed five and injured 13, Ukrainian officials said according to the Washington Post. The governor of the region warned of increased attacks on residential areas and businesses.
Russian shelling of Kharkiv has killed 18 people and wounded 106 in the last four days alone, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Sunday, according to the Associated Press.
