Airport roof collapses from heavy rain as summer storm hits Thailand
An airport roof collapsed under the pressure of heavy rain as a tropical thunderstorm battered Bangkok on Monday.
The roof of a newly built terminal at the Don Mueang International Airport buckled then gave way during the downpour as terrified passengers watched.
Video taken on Wednesday evening April 18 shows water pouring into the terminal as strong winds and a violent downpour tore down its roof.
The structure, which was built near the airport's Terminal 1, was completed last year to service tour groups, but remained unused due to the pandemic. No one was reported injured as the terminal was unoccupied at the time of the collapse.
Don Mueang Airport management has launched an investigation into the incident. Saksayam Chidchob, Thailand's Transport Minister, has also ordered Airports of Thailand to probe the cause of the collapse.
Thailand's Meteorological Department last Friday warned of thunderstorms affecting northeastern Thailand over the weekend and on Monday due to a moderate high-pressure area over China.
They said: 'Outbreaks of summer storms are forecast followed by thunderstorms, gusty wind and hail. All transport systems should proceed with caution during the storms, and farmers should make preparations to prevent crop damage.'
