Cobra tries to swallow frog many times its size in bone-chilling video by Indian snake rescuer
If you've ever ordered more food than you can possibly eat, spare a thought for this snake, whose appetite also appears to exceed its ability to judge meal size.
An Indian snake rescuer witnessed a cobra killing and then trying to swallow a frog many times its size on 14 April.
The incident began when a family in Pune in western India saw a cobra chasing a frog in their garden and called rescuer Saidas Kusal.
When Saidas went to the house, he saw that the hunt had come to a close. The snake had bitten the frog, injecting it with lethal poison, and was waiting for it to die.
Saidas said: “Cobras bite and wait for their prey to die so they can eat in peace.”
The frog, though paralysed by the poison, was still breathing laboriously, and making desperate attempts to get away. Whenever it moved, the predator would step in and drag it back with its mouth.
The snake sensed the human presence and decided to finish its still-alive meal. But swallowing a frog five times its width took huge effort and the cobra was running out of time.
Saidas waited for some time to see if the cobra could complete the act. But with the crowd swelling outside the house to witness the rare spectacle, he was forced to intervene.
“Snakes don’t feed if people get too close, So, I had to capture the cobra and put it in a bag. The frog had also died by then,” said Saidas.
He released the cobra in a natural habitat later in the night.
