Children in Spain on Thursday (April 21) are attending school for the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic without face masks.

The change comes after the authorities ended the compulsory wearing of masks inside buildings from April 20.

"I tricked my kids into putting their masks on as usual on their way to school and then told them the good news," said a father of three who lives in San Jose, Almeria.

"They were delighted! It's been a very long time coming," he added.

"They've had to wear them all day, every day since returning to school after the first lockdown in 2020," he said.

"And let's not forget the brilliant teachers who've also had to put up with masks all this time," he concluded.
