Israeli security forces patrolled in front of the Dome of the Rock mosque as Jewish settlers entered Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa mosque compound to perform rituals on Thursday 21 April.

The arrival of the hardline Jewish groups was seen as particularly provocative as it followed several violent clashes between Palestinians and Israeli security forces, who have used force to clear out Muslim worshippers in order to facilitate the right-wing Jewish groups' visits to the holy site.

The settlers marked the Jewish festival of Passover, while Muslims celebrated Ramadan.

The Jewish groups performed Talmudic rituals while Palestinians forced out of the site tried to block alleys used by the settlers to get in.
