Hundreds of miles of Florida beaches covered in stinky sargassum seaweed

Hundreds of miles of beaches in South Florida have been covered in tonnes of stinky sargassum seaweed.

Drone footage captured in Delray Beach by Larry Richardson today (April 21) showed the scale of the problem.

Experts say the sargassum is getting worse every year due to global warming and an excess of man-made nutrient-rich runoff flowing into the ocean.

Coastal communities are searching for ways to deal with the stinky, scratchy seaweed, which can be a turn-off for tourists.

Some cities and towns plough it into the sand, others truck it to landfills.
