Children hide in the bunkers of the Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol amid claims of new Russian attack
New video released by Ukraine's Azov Battalion shows children hiding in the bunkers of the Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol, amid reports of a renewed Russian attack on the plant.
The footage, released on Saturday 23 April and said to have been shot the same day, shows women and children sheltering underground in the plant, which has been surrounded by Russian forces.
One woman tells the camera operator (at 03:46): "My husband works here (Azovtal) and we are here for the whole family. We have been here since March 2, we really want to go home, but we don’t have a house. We hope for a corridor, the food will end soon."
Another woman (at 04:14) is asked how many days have you been here? She replies: "We have been here for 50 days, since the 25th, when the shooting began. We arrived and hid here, and since the 25th we have been here constantly."
At 07:51 in the video a girl stressed how long many of them had been sheltering: "On the 27th of February, my mother and grandmother left home. After that we did not see the sky and the sun. We want to get to a safe place."
The video comes amid reports that Russian troops have resumed their attack on the facility, just a day after President Putin told his forces to halt an attempt to storm the plant and instead seal it off.
Ukrainian presidential adviser Oleksiy Arestovych said on national TV that: “The enemy is trying to strangle the final resistance of the defenders of Mariupol in the Azovstal area."
The Azov Battalion is part of Ukraine's National Guard but has historical links to neo-Nazis.
