Video shows children in bunker of Azovstal steel plant in besieged Mariupol
Video shows residents of the besieged Mariupol in southern Ukraine including children holed up in one of the bunkers at a steelworks on April 24 as news emerged that around 100 Ukrainians have been evacuated.
The Azovstal plant is said to be the last area of Mariupol not under Russian control.
On Sunday afternoon (May 1), Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that a group of about 100 people was being evacuated from the steelworks.
This video was purportedly filmed on Sunday (April 24) and shared by the far-right Azov Battalion, part of Ukraine’s National Guard. It shows children receiving Easter treats and washing drying them on makeshift hangers. One toddler is seen wearing homemade diapers out of cellophane.
“There are 600 of us here [among the various bunkers in the steelworks], we are without water and food, we don’t know how long we’ll be here, the children are very afraid, they can’t sleep, they are irritated all the time,” one woman (in hooped long-sleeve top at around 2mins 12) says in the video.
Another woman, seen wearing a cardigan (at 6mins 49 secs) says through tears: "I, on behalf of all people from Mariupol, appeal to the whole world, please help us, we want to live in our city, in our country. We are fed up with these bombings, constant airstrikes on our land, how much longer will this continue?"
She adds: "The children are constantly crying here, they want to play and live. Stop this aggression, I ask the US president, I ask the UK, France, Canada, Japan, Israel, Turkey. I ask everyone, help please, free us!"
