Awesome footage shows a huge monitor lizard prowling through a sewer in Thailand.

Photographer Gittipong Vray noticed the Godzilla-like creature crawling below the pavements near his office in Bangkok. It would even emerge from the drains and clamber along grass verges.

The office worker recorded the reptile's movement by using a small camera attached to a stick which he lowered into the crumbling concrete pipe work.

The resulting close-up video captured the beast prowling the murky sewers in search of its next meal - usually rats, frogs, snakes or scraps of meat.

Gittipong said: 'I see this monitor lizard almost every day. Sometimes it will even sunbathe on the sidewalk, but most of the time it just moves around in the drain.'

Asian water monitor lizards normally live in canals, swamps, sewers and ponds in cities in Thailand. They feed on fish, snakes, frogs and scraps of food left by humans.

The reptiles are aggressive when threatened and have a mildly venomous bite which sometimes carries harmful bacteria.
