Thousands of grunion fish swarm a beach in southern California during a recent full moon.

Footage captured by Mark Girardeau on April 18 shows the fish writhing around on the sand on Capistrano Beach.

"Grunion runs happen during full moons in Southern California, a weird phenomenon that brings these fish out of the water to spawn," said Giradeau.

"Shortly after they return to the water and completely disappear out of sight. These fish all came onto the beach and about 15 minutes later, they were completely gone!" he added.
