Crowds and chaos at Istanbul protest against 'politically motivated' Gezi Park trial verdicts
Large crowds took to the streets of Istanbul, Turkey, on Tuesday 27 April in protest against Monday's conviction of philanthropist Osman Kavala and seven other activists.
Mr Kavala was sentenced to life on charges related to nationwide protests in 2013 and a failed coup attempt in 2016. He had already spent over four years in jail without being convicted of anything.
He denied the charges and his supporters, and many of Turkey's international allies, say the case is politically motivated. Western diplomats were among those attending court for the verdict.
The rally against the Gezi Park trial verdicts ended in clashes with police.
About 50 people were arrested, according to reports.
