Large protests in central Istanbul, opposing Monday’s verdict against Osman Kavala and seven other activists, ended in clashes with police on Tuesday 26 April.

About 50 people were arrested, according to reports.

Philanthropist Osman Kavala and seven other activists were convicted in the so-called Gezi Park trial.

Mr Kavala was sentenced to life in prison on charges related to nationwide protests in 2013 and a failed coup attempt in 2016. He had already spent four years in jail without conviction.

He denied the charges and his supporters, and Turkey's international allies, say the case is politically motivated. Western diplomats were among those at court for the verdict.

Video shows a crowd gathered during the day outside the Chamber of Mechanical Engineers (TMMOB) and then police arresting protesters at night in the nearby Cihangir neighbourhood.
