Air freshener canister explodes inside car parked under scorching sun for two days
An air freshener canister exploded inside a car which was parked for two days under the harsh summer sun in Thailand.
Security guard Warawut Suwanthong, 53, was chatting with friends in Samut Prakan province when a loud explosion rattled the neighbourhood on April 23 afternoon.
Thinking it was a busted transformer, they checked the area and found a damaged sedan sitting in a parking lot in the village courtyard. Its rear windshield had been shattered, and shards of glass littered the ground around it.
Inside, they discovered a torn spray can with its bottom blown off. Other items such as an electric hair straightener and a white-and-red cosmetic bag had been flung about a metre away outside the car. The back seat cushions had also reportedly been flattened.
The car has been allegedly parked under the sun for two days with all of its windows closed. The hazardous aerosol can is believed to have caused the explosion.
Pressurised gas and chemicals inside spray cans rapidly expand and can blow up when exposed to excessive heat.
No one was reported hurt from the accident. Village officers are now waiting for the car's owner to come forward.
The Meteorological Department of Thailand said temperatures in the capital Bangkok were between 36 and 39 degrees Celsius on Wednesday but cloud cover helped it to feel cooler.
Officials recorded the hottest ever day in Thailand on April 28, 2016, in Mae Hong Son province when the temperature reached 44.6 degrees Celsius.
