Drought Severity in KZN, South Africa

Buy video

One of the biggest challenges facing the province of KwaZulu Natal on the Eastern Coast of South Africa, is the severe lack of water. Without any decent rainfall since early March 2015 the current situation is dire.

The dam shown in this video was full to capacity in December 2014 and in seven months is empty to the point that one can drive around the basin inside the dam.

This video takes you on a short tour through the extremely dry macadamia orchards before crossing an empty river on route to the dam capable of storing 80 thousand cubic metres of water, before driving through the only bit of water presence at the swamp lands (which even those are now only half their normal size) besides the small pools of water in the dam basin.

The situation is dire, and if there is no decent rainfall in the next few months the province will run out of water by the end of the year, with some areas running out in the next two months.
