A huge crowd of Muslims gathered at the Three Anchor Bay in Cape Town for the sighting of the new moon which would signal the end of the holy month of Ramadan. Families had gathered to perform evening prayers and to enjoy iftaar (the meal to break the fast after sunset).

Cape Town Mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis, attended and said he a has been attending Iftaar's with Muslim families for years, but this year it was the first time he had attended in his official capacity as mayor. Hill-Lewis said the Cape Town Muslim community is one of the most generous and outreaching communities the city has.

Also in attendance was Western Cape Premier, Alan Winde, said seeing people celebrating Iftaar in the streets after two years of Covid was quite amazing and it was a great coming together of people.

After sunset and evening prayers the President of the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) announced the moon had not been sighted. This means that Eid will be celebrated on Tuesday 3 May.
