Giant homemade rockets were fired across a field in Thailand for a festival that has finally resumed after being put on hold during the pandemic.

The colourful projectiles were taken to an open patch of land by Buddhist monks and devotees in Thanyaburi district, Pathum Thani province for the 'Look Now' rocket festival on May 1.

Rocketeers from 26 Buddhist temples and districts paraded their DIY creations made from wood, steel, and potassium nitrate before these were set off while hanging on a vertical pole to ‘race’ each other.

Footage shows the rockets shooting towards the finish line as hundreds of the crowd cheered.

Provincial Culture officer Thitnat Sombatsiri said: ‘This had been the tradition in our place for centuries. We are happy that we could continue with it again after two years.’

The Look Noo festival began as a Buddhist ceremony in the region where it was customary to light up a dead monk’s cremation fire using a rocket. As locals put more effort into their homemade rockets, the tradition evolved into a festival and later on, competition was held for enthusiasts.
