A pair of snakes performed a mesmerising mating dance in Cambodia.

The wild serpents were slithering on the grassy part of Virachey National Park in Ratanakiri province on April 29 when they were spotted by environmental officers.

The team, who were then doing a study on giant dragonflies in the sanctuary, stopped to watch the pair as they glided onto each other while being locked in a mating ritual.

Footage shows the two common rat snakes intertwined while slithering horizontally before mating.

A Ministry of Environment spokesman said: ‘Creatures inside Cambodia’s protected zones are peaceful. We came across this pair and had to stop and watch this interesting event.’

Rat snakes usually feed on rodents, from which their common name was derived, as well as frogs and lizards.
