This is the moment scary flashes of lightning lit up the night sky during a storm in southern Thailand.

Resident Krizn Platongpong filmed the weather phenomenon from his home in Yala province bordering Malaysia on May 1. Footage shows the consecutive bolts illuminating different parts of the sky.

Krizn said: 'It's a natural phenomenon that I've never seen before. I want to know the scientific explanation behind it. This strange events happened in Betong, and it's been more than 2 hours.

'The light came from the Malaysian side and caused the satellite to have no signal for a very long time. Satellite TV is not available at all. Probably because there were a lot of clouds.'

Lightning is caused by electrical imbalances between clouds and the ground, or between the clouds themselves. Intracloud lightning occurs when two areas of cloud cover have different charges.
