Last-line Ukrainian defenders of Mariupol sing nationalist song to rally spirits
Last-line and last-ditch defenders of the Ukrainian city of Mariupol held up in the Azovstal steel factory are seen here singing a nationalist song from 1932 to rally their dire spirits as invading forces continue to inch closer to securing the city to full Russian control.
The footage was filmed on Friday (May 6) and provided by pool footage.
The lyrics to the song are below:
We were born at a great hour,
from the fires of war and from the flames of fire -
we were nurtured by the pain of losing Ukraine,
oppression and wrath on our enemies fed us.
And here we go in the battle of life,
solid, strong, unbreakable as granite -
for weeping has not given freedom to anyone yet,
and he who fights gains peace.
We do not want fame or reward -
pay us the luxury of struggle:
it is sweeter for us to die in battle
how to live in chains like dumb slaves.
Enough ruins and disagreements -
brother does not dare to go to war.
Under the blue and yellow flag of freedom
let us unite all our great people.
The great truth is the same for everyone
our proud call to the people is:
"Be faithful to the homeland to the death -
Ukraine is above all for us! "
Leads us to the battle of the fallen fighters of glory -
for us the law is the highest and the order:
Cathedral of the Ukrainian State -
free, strong, from Xi'an to the Caucasus.
