Flash floods hit villages as Tropical Cyclone Asani strengthens rains in southern Thailand
Flash floods hit villages as Tropical Cyclone Asani caused strong winds over southern Thailand.
Heavy rainfall battered Surat Thani province over the weekend, damaging at least 25 houses, 25 roads, and 18 bridges, the Surat Thani disaster mitigation office said. Footage taken on May 6 shows a swollen river's strong current sweeping fallen branches and debris downstream.
A 30-year-old Burmese man named by police as Sai Chan went missing after reportedly driving his motorbike through the deluge in heavily-flooded Tha Chang district. Authorities found his body on Saturday, May 7.
Thailand's Meteorological Department warned of more rain and flooding to come this week due to the influence of Asani, which is centred over the Bay of Bengal with maximum sustained winds of 105 kilometres per hour. It is moving northwest at about 16 kilometres per hour.
In its May 9 bulletin, the weather agency said: '[Asani] will likely move to the upper Bay of Bengal during 9-10 May 2022. This storm has no effect on Thailand but causes the wind prevailing over Thailand, the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea to strengthen.
'Continuous rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy rains is likely in the South. People in the South should beware of the severe condition that may cause flash flood and overflows.'
