Local Indonesians mark the celebration of Eid al-Fitr 2022 by gathering and celebrating a traditional boat decorating contest.

Footage filmed in Gunung Malintang village, West Sumatra province on May 8, shows locals pushing enormous ornamental boats on the road to be carried to the river.

This tradition is being held again after 2 years of absence due to the pandemic.

The tradition called 'Alek Bakajang' has been carried out from generation to generation as a symbol of transportation for tribal chiefs on the riverbank for gathering or visiting other tribal chiefs on Eid al-Fitr.

The party is held on the fourth day after Eid for 4-5 days. Previously, youths worked together to make and decorate canoes using plywood that had been painted identically to resemble a cruise ship.

Last year, this tradition was awarded as the best Cultural Attraction in the Indonesian Charm Award (API) 2021.
