The masts from Thames shipwreck SS Richard Montgomery are to be removed in an operation due to start in June.

BBC London has today (May 9) referred to the wreck as "one of London's most unlikely tourist destinations" due to a rise in visitor interest.

The American liberty ship sank in August 1944, 1.5 miles north of Sheerness in Kent, with an estimated 1400 tonnes of explosives still onboard.

Footage captured at low tide this afternoon (May 9) shows a cormorant perched on the wreck's middle mast drying its wings in the sunshine.

The badly corroded masts will be removed to reduce the risk of them falling and setting off an explosion.
